Question : WITHDRAWAL OF SUBSIDY IN KVIC



(a) the amount of subsidy given to the Khadi and Village Industries during each of the last three years;

(b) whether the Government have taken a decision to stop subsidy to Khadi and Village Industries;

(c) if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor;

(d) whether about 40 lakh workers and employees are working in the Khadi and Village Industries sector and doing the job of weaving, spinning and marketing Khadi;

(e) whether all these workers and employees are likely to be rendered jobless due to this decision of the Government to stop subsidy to this sector;

(f) whether a large number of Members of Parliament have given a representation to the Prime Minister to help Khadi and Village Industries and save the workers from being jobless; and
(g) if so, the steps taken by the Government to continue subsidy to this sector of Khadi and Village Industries?

(a): During each of the last three years, details of grants, loans and subsidy provided to the Khadi and Village Industries Commission are given at Annexure - A.

(b): No, Sir.

(c): Does not arise.

(d): No, Sir. As on 31.3.1999, 13.85 lakhs persons were engaged in weaving, spinning and marketing of Khadi.

(e): Does not arise.

(f): Yes, Sir.

(g): Does not arise in view of (b) above.
