Question : PRODUCTIVITY OF PULSES



(a) whether the productivity of pulses in the country is at par with that of advanced countries including China;

(b) if so, the details thereof, countrywise; and

(c) the steps proposed to be taken to improve the productivity of pulses in the country?

(a) & (b): As per reports of Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) for the year 2010 (latest available), the productivity of pulses in India is lower than that in advanced countries including China. Details of productivity of pulses in major pulse producing/advanced countries in the world for the year 2010 are as under:-

(c): In order to increase productivity of pulses in the country, the Government of India has taken following initiatives through Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR):-
Development of short duration, photo-thermo insensitive varieties for different agro-ecology. Development of hybrids in pigeonpea. Development of efficient plant architecture in major pulses crops. Development of good agronomic practices. Development of bio-intensive Integrated Pest Management modules. Development of resource conservation and utilization technologies. Improved machines for planting, harvesting, threshing and processing. Production of breeder seed of latest released varieties & hybrids and organizing frontline demonstrations in farmers’ field.
