(c) Cotton production in the country has increased by 36% during 2004-05 and reached a record level of 243 lakh bales as compared to the estimated production of 170 lakh bales during previous year. During 2002-03, the cotton production was 136.00 lakh bales. The Government of India had already launched Technology Mission on Cotton (TMC) in February 2000 in the course of 9th Five Year Plan, with the objective of improvement in the production, productivity and quality of cotton and reduction in cost of cultivation, in order to provide abundant supply of good quality cotton at competitive prices to the textile industry and a remunerative return to the farmers. The TMC scheme has been continued during the 10th Five Year Plan i.e. upto 2006-07.
