Question : Pollution of Coasts

(a)the quantum of scrap and waste material accumulated along the Indian coasts from abroad during each of the last three years;
(b)whether there has been any utilization of the said scrap?
(c)if so, the details thereof and if not, the manner in which the said scrap has been disposed of; and
(d)the efforts made by the Government to check rising pollution along the Indian coasts?

(a) to (c)There is no such information available with the Ministry.

(d)The Central Government has declared the coastal stretches of the country excluding the islands of Andman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep, as Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) under the provisions of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. The CRZ Notification, 2011 provides for restriction on setting up and expansion of any industry, operation for processes and manufacture or handling or storage or disposal of hazardous substances in the said CRZ and prohibits dumping of city or town wastes including construction debris, industrial solid wastes, fly ash etc.
