MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT (DR. D. PURANDESWARI)
(a): While most students do get admission into colleges after passing the twelfth
class in Delhi, it is true that some students may not be getting admission in an institution of
their choice.
(b): As per information supplied by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE),
in Delhi there are 19 engineering colleges, with a total of 7150 seats available in various
courses in addition to the engineering seats provided by Central Government in National Institute
of Technology (NIT) Delhi and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi.
(c) & (d): The Central Government has established a National Institution of Technology in Delhi
in 2010 in which 50% of the seats are provided for residents of Delhi and Chandigarh. Consequent to
passing of the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Act, 2006, the Central
Government has increased the intake capacity in all Central Educational Institutions (CEI) including
technical institutions, to an extent of 54% including in IIT Delhi. This has led to enormous
expansion of seats available in CEIs. In 2009, the Delhi Government converted the erstwhile Delhi
College of Engineering into a university and established the Delhi Technological University.
However, increase of intake capacity in State controlled public institutions falls under the
purview of State Government.
