Question : Solar Rooftop Panels

(a) whether installation of Rooftop Solar panels is reportedly viable only for industrial users and not viable for residential users, if so, the details thereof and the reaction of the Government thereto;
(b) the proactive measures taken by the Government for boosting rooftop solar adoption for domestic/residential users;
(c) the installed infrastructure under rooftop solar power generation in the country, State/UT-wise;
(d) whether the Government proposes to exempt the solar equipment from VAT, if so, the details thereof; and
(e) the total amount of subsidy paid by the Government for installation of solar panels at rooftops in the country during the last three years, State/UT-wise?

(a): No, Madam. Installation of solar rooftop systems is viable both for industrial and residential users. The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) is also providing 30% subsidy to promote solar rooftop systems in the residential/domestic sectors, to make it further attractive.
(b): The measures taken by the Government for promoting solar rooftops for domestic/residential users are as follows:
• Provision of 30% subsidy for installation of solar rooftop systems for domestic/residential users;
• Loans available under Priority Sector Lending upto Rs. 10 lakhs for individuals;
• Provision of bank loans as a part of home loan/ home improvement loan for rooftop solar systems;
• Capacity building and public awareness through electronic and print media;
(c): So far about 166.67 MWp grid connected solar rooftop projects have been installed in the country. The State-wise details are given in Annexure.
(d): No, Madam.
(e): The MNRE has released Rs. 139.40 crore as subsidy for installation of grid connected rooftop solar systems in the country during the last three years. The details of funds released, State/UT-wise are given in Annexure.
