(a) the details of income from the freight by railways during each of the last three years, year-wise;

(b) whether there has been upswing in the freight during the current financial year;

(c) if so, the details thereof; and

(d) the details of quantity of material transported by railway on paid basis during each of the last three years?

(a): The details of total Income from freight during the last three years are as under:

(b) & (c): Yes, Sir. There has been an upswing in the freight during the current year. As compared to 133.17 Million Tonnes of freight in the first quarter (upto June) of 2003-04, the corresponding figure for the current quarter is 141.26 million tonnes. The freight earnings (provisional) have also registered an increase from Rs.6,275 crore (upto June 03) to Rs.7,091 crore (upto June 04). The month wise details are tabulated below:
