(a) Water quality monitoring of river Ganga in Bihar is being carried out by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) at 15 locations. Drains discharging in Ganga in the state of Bihar does not have noticeable impact on Ganga Water Quality except for Fecal Coliform as observed from water quality data from 2011-15.
The dataset reveals the followings:
• The river water quality is conforming the bathing criteria for DO at most of the locations from 2011 to 2015.
• The long term assessment of water quality data indicates the stretch falling in the state of Bihar has been reported relatively clean in term of organic pollution mainly because of enough dilution received from tributaries of river Ganga.
• The mass bathing criteria as notified also refers to Fecal Coliform limit of 2500MPN/100ml. The river does not conform the water quality criteria for Faecal Coliform in the stretch of Bihar at and D/s of major urban centers.
(b) CPCB has inventoried 25 drains discharging 580 MLD of waste water into River Ganga.
Steps taken to check water pollution are:
(i) CPCB has issued directions for implementing the water conservation/Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) in 5 key industrial sectors namely distillery, pulp & paper, sugar, textile and tannery under section 18 (1) (b) of the Water Act, 1974 to respective State Pollution Control Boards to further direct respective industries to submit time bound plans. The Action plan implementation will be completed by March, 2017.
(ii) CPCB has also issued directions to 32 concerned municipalities / local authorities located on main stem of river Ganga in Bihar responsible for management of sewage and solid waste and asked to submit a time bound program for implementing the directions. In respect of directions issued, all 32 concerned municipalities / local authorities have submitted Action Plan for the management of Sewage/Solid waste.
(iii) Directions have been issued for installation of online emission/effluent monitoring system in industries located in Ganga Basin
(iv) Frequent inspection and monitoring of GPIs (764 Nos) and drains are being carried out and actions are being taken against defaulting units.
