Question : Number of Deaths in Government Hospitals

Will the Minister of HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE be pleased to state:

(a) whether the Government has taken note of the increasing deaths in Central Government Hospitals;

(b) if so, the number of deaths reported in such hospitals during each of the last three years and the current year along with the reaction of the Government thereto;

(c) whether a large number of ventilators and other equipments procured in the such hospitals during the said period are not functional;

(d) if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor, hospital-wise along with the corrective steps taken in this regard;

(e) whether the NHRC has issued a notice to the said hospitals for unhygienic conditions, acute shortage of essential services and illegal clinical drug trials on patients; and

(f) if so, the details thereof along with the corrective steps taken/being taken by the Government so far and the achievements thereof?

(a): As per data available there is no significant increase in deaths in Central Government Hospitals in last years.

(b): The number of deaths reported in Central Government Hospitals in respect of which data is available, during each of the last three years and the current year is as below:

(c) & (d): As far as the above hospitals are concerned, all the ventilators and other equipments procured in the last three years and current year are functional, except in Safdarjung Hospital. In Safdarjung Hospital, out of 143 ICU ventilators which have been installed satisfactorily, 8 are not functional due to non operational zone of newly constructed Super Speciality Block. Due to same reason, following equipments are also not functional:

• 2 Central Station 21” (out of 50)
• 35 Monitor size 19” & 15” (out of 595)
• 6 Anesthesia Workstation (out of 28)

(e) & (f): As far as above mentioned hospitals are concerned, no notice has been received in these hospitals from NHRC for unhygienic conditions, acute shortage of essential services and illegal drug trials on patients.
