Question : INSTALLATION OF HANDPUMPS AND SUPPLY OF DRINKING WATER



(a) whether the three programmes of installation of one lakh hand-pumps in water scarce areas, drinking water facilities to one lakh primary schools in rural areas and revival of one lakh traditional sources of water announced on the occasion of 55th Independence Day Celebrations, 2003 have been completed;

(b) if so, the details of the projects completed, State-wise;

(c) if not, the reasons therefore;

(d) the time by which these programmes are likely to be completed; and

(e) the number of persons assured perennial source of water by these projects?

(a) The three programmes of installation of one lakh hand-pumps in water scarce areas, drinking water facilities to one lakh primary schools in rural areas and revival of one lakh traditional sources of water was announced by the Honourable Prime Minister on the occasion of Independence Day Celebrations, 2002. The programmes named as three programmes of Prime Minister, were for two years period-2003-2004 to 2004-2005 and the funds have been provided to the States for completion of the programmes in these two years.


(b) to (d) As per the reports received from the States/UTs so far, 75798 hand pumps have been installed, 41591 traditional sources of water have been revived and 60117 primary schools in rural areas have been covered with drinking water supply. The state-wise detail is enclosed as Annexure-I. The States are in the process of completion of the projects taken up from the funds already provided and Central Government is monitoring the progress through monthly progress reports.

(e) As per guidelines, there is a provision of one hand-pump or stand post for every 250 persons. The projects taken up under three programmes of Prime Minister are based on these norms.
