Question : SPORTS SCHOOLS COLLEGES



(a) the total number of sports schools/colleges functioning in the country at present, State-wise;

(b) whether the Government has received any proposal from various States including Maharashtra for opening new sports schools/colleges in their States;

(c) if so, the details thereof, State-wise;

(d) the action taken by the Government in this regard along with the total amount likely to be sanctioned; and

(e) the time by which these sports schools/colleges are likely to be opened?

THE MINISTER OF STATE (INDEPENDENT CHARGE) FOR SKILL DEVELOPMENT, ENTERPRENEURSHIP, YOUTH AFFAIRS AND SPORTS (SHRI SARBANANDA SONOWAL)

(a) Under the administrative control of the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, there are three institutes viz., Lakshmibai National University of Physical Education, Gwalior with a North Eastern Regional Centre (NERC) at Guwahati, Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education, Thiruvanthapuram and Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports, Patiala alongwith its courses being offered at Bangalore and Kolkata Centres of Sports Authority of India (SAI). The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports does not maintain data about the State Government - run institutions imparting physical and sports education in the country.

(b) to (e): Since, sports is a state subject, responsibility for promotion and development of sports including opening new sports schools/colleges is that of State Governments. The Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports has not received any proposal from States including Maharastra for opening new sports schools/colleges.
