Question : Targets for Development of Smart Cities


(a) whether the Government has been able to achieve the target to develop smart cities during the last three years;

(b) if so, the total number of cities targetted to be developed, city-wise and their present status as on date; and

(c) if not, the reasons therefor and the time by which the Government would be able to achieve the targets?

(a) to (c): Government of India launched the Smart Cities Mission (SCM) on 25 June 2015. 100 Smart cities have been selected through 4 rounds of competition from January 2016 to June 2018. So far, these Smart Cities have tendered out 6,721 projects worth ? 1,88,506 crore; work orders have been issued in 6,124 projects worth ? 1,62,908 crore; 3,421 projects worth ? 58,735 crore have been completed. As on 21 January 2022, Government of India has released ? 28,413.60 crore for 100 Smart Cities, out of which ? 23,668.27 crore (83%) have been utilized. State/citywise progress of projects is given in Annexure-I. During the last 3 years, 5,358 projects worth ? 1,38,459 crore have been tendered, 5,171 projects worth ? 1,32,021 crore have been work-ordered and 3,103 projects worth ? 53,486 crore have been completed. The period of implementation of SCM has been extended upto June, 2023 and all Smart Cities are expected to complete their projects within the stipulated time.
