Question : Extinction of Rivers

(a) whether the Government has carried out any counting of rivers;
(b) if so, the details thereof and the number of rivers which have become extinct;
(c) whether there is any scheme for rejuvenation of the extinct rivers; and
(d) if so, the details thereof?

(a) Yes, Madam.
(b) Using remote sensing data of 2009-10, for the first time, a total length of 42,86,603 Km of rivers/streams have been mapped. Out of all rivers / streams mapped, 15615 rivers have been identified by name. the numbers of rivers which have become extinct cannot be determined since no earlier data is available for comparison purposes.
(c) & (d) Do not arise since the data regarding the number of rivers which have become extinct is not available.
