Question : Biofloc Fish Farming

(a) the details of steps taken by the Government to promote and push biofloc fish farming in the country; and
(b) the reasons why the Government is making it a demand-driven scheme and the same cannot be implemented in States where aquaculture farming is in abundance like in the State of Andhra Pradesh?

(a) and (b): The Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying is implementing a flagship scheme “Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY)- A scheme to bring about Blue Revolution through sustainable and responsible development of fisheries sector in India” with highest ever investment of Rs. 20,050 crore in the fisheries sector over a period of five years with effect from the current financial (2020-21) in all States/Union Territories including Andhra Pradesh. The PMMSY inter-alia promotes adoption of technologies for enhancing production and productivity, post-harvest management including biofloc farming. The activities relating biofloc farming primarily implemented in association with the States/UTs on cost sharing basis under the PMMSY. The Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, based on the viable proposals received during the current financial year (2020-21) (as on date), has approved 994 units of biofloc units at a total investment of Rs. 10257 lakh for 16 States and UTs.
