(a) whether performance of three out of seven remote sensing satellites has been below their maximum capacity;
(b) if so, the details thereof;
(c) whether the revenue realized from the seven satelliltes in operation has been below expectations;
(d) if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor; and
(e) the measures taken for the optimum utilization of the said satellites and realization of maximum revenue?

(a) & (b) The average capacity utilization of three out of the seven Indian Remote Sensing Satellites, namely,
IRS-P3, IRS-1C and IRS-P4 (Oceansat-1), during the period 2002-08, was 32%, 45% and 50% of their maximum capacity, as
observed in the Audit report of C&AG (Report No. 21 of 2010-11).
The IRS-P3, an experimental satellite launched in 1995 and IRS-1C launched in 1996 had completed their designed life of
three years by 1998 and 1999 respectively. IRS-P3 and IRS-1C were thus in their extended life period during the period
(2002-2008) mentioned in the Audit report of C&AG.
The IRS-P4 (Oceansat-1) satellite launched in 1999 completed its designed life of five years by 2004. In view of reduction
in the availability of power onboard the satellite, capacity utilization since 2001 was limited.
