Question : CCTV in Coaches

(a) whether the Ministry has taken steps to install CCTV cameras in all coaches in the country including Thiruvananthapuram-New Delhi Kerala Express, Kanyakumari-Mumbai Jayanti Janatha Express, Thiruvananthapuram- Nizamuddin Rajdhani Express, Thiruvananthapuram – Nizamuddin Swarna Jayanti Superfast train and Thiruvananthapuram – Nizamuddin Superfast Express, in order to enhance safety and security of the passengers;

(b) if so, the details thereof, train-wise and if not, the reasons therefor;

(c) whether the Ministry has taken steps to provide internet facilities in trains running long distances from Thiruvananthapuram;

(d) if so, the details thereof; and

(e) if not, the reasons therefor?

(a) & (b): Indian Railways is planning to provide CCTV in 127 trains of Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duranto, Garibrath, Yuva and Mahamana Express

trains and 2400 EMU Coaches over Western Railway and Central Railway in first phase. Out of list of trains mentioned, only train no. 12431 (Thiruvananthapuram – H. Nizamuddin Rajdhani Express) is covered in first phase. Reserved Coaches of remaining trains will be covered in next phase. A centralized tender is being floated by RailTel Corporation of India Limited (RCIL) a Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) under Ministry of Railways for supply for CCTV cameras and associated system for fixing CCTV cameras in coaches and stations.

(c) & (d): As a pilot project, Railway had provided Wi-Fi in Howrah – New Delhi, Howrah - Rajdhani Express using Satellite Communication technology. This technology was very capital intensive with recurring cost in form of bandwidth charges. Indian Railways is now exploring various cost effective technologies to provide Wi-Fi in moving trains. Once such a technology is available, decision to extend Wi-Fi facility in trains will be taken.
