Question : BIS CERTIFICATION FOR CONSUMER ITEMS



(a) whether the Union Government have recently decided to bring several more consumer items under the net of BIS;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether many consumer items which are compulsorily covered under the BIS net are freely available in the markets without any ISI mark;

(d) if so, the details thereof alongwith the reasons thereto;

(e) the steps taken by the Union Government to ensure that the items which are compulsorily in the BIS net are not available in the markets without any ISI mark;

(f) whether the State Governments are not implementing the guidelines issued by the Union Government regarding BIS certification of consumer goods; and

(g) if so, the steps Union Government propose to take to ensure the strict complaints of its orders?

(a) & (b) : Certification of Packaged Natural Mineral Water, Packaged Drinking Water and Clinical Thermometers has been recently made mandatory under the BIS Certification Scheme.


(c ), (d) & (e): BIS receives information through various sources about the availability of products in the market without bearing Standard Mark of BIS though they are covered under mandatory certification. In such cases, BIS informs the concerned implementing authority of the Central/State Government for taking necessary action. In cases where products bearing false Standard Mark of BIS are found, action is initiated under the BIS Act, 1986.


(f) & (g): BIS through State Level Coordination Committee regularly apprises States about their obligation towards enforcement of Quality Control Orders.
