Question : Urban Sanitation

Will the Minister of URBAN DEVELOPMENT be pleased to state:

(a) whether the Government has any roadmap to elevate India to the international levels of urban sanitation that is found in developed Countries;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the commitments under Global Goals for Sustainable Development, ensure everyone everywhere, the access to basic toilets by 2030; and

(d) if so, the details thereof and development in this regard?

THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF URBAN DEVELOPMENT

(a) & (b): The Government of India has launched “Swachh Bharat Mission” (SBM) on 2nd October, 2014 in partnership with States and Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) with aim to elevate India to the international levels of urban sanitation that is found in developed Countries by creating infrastructure for end-to-end Solid Waste Management eradication of open defecation and bring about behavior changes in the citizens.

(c) & (d): Urban Development is a State Subject. Government of India supports the efforts of State Governments by providing technical and financial assistance to States under various schemes & programmes. In the Urban areas based on censes 2011 data and survey conducted by cites & towns, approximately 66,42,221 Nos. of Individual Household Toilets and 5,07,750 Nos. of Public Toilet/Community Toilets are required to achieve access for all to toilets. In this regard, 31,55,520 Nos. of Individual Household Toilets and 1,16,820 Nos. of Public Toilet/Community Toilets seats have already been constructed.
