Question : LEPROSY ERADICATION



(a) whether the Government made any review on Leprosy Eradication Programme;

(b) if so, when was the last review made;

(c) the position at present State-wise;

(d) the specific steps taken during the last three years in eradicating leprosy in the country, Orissa in particular; and

(e) the steps proposed to be taken to provide proper treatment of leprosy patients and also for their rehabilitation after they are cured?

(a) & (b) : Yes, Sir. In the month of March - April, 2000 an independent evaluation of the programme was conducted. Also a review of the programme was conducted on 24th & 25th November, 2000 at the all India State Leprosy Officer Meeting at New Delhi.

(c) : A statement giving the present State-wise position is enclosed at Annexure - I.

(d) : Two rounds of Modified Leprosy Elimination Campaigns (MLEC) were launched in all the States including Orissa leading to detection of 4.64 lakh new cases in the 1st round and 2.12 lakh new cases in 2nd round.

In the State of Orissa 62,844 number of cases were detected in the 1st round and 27197 number of cases were detected in the 2nd round of the campaign.

Intensive public awareness campaigns and training activities for general health case staff at the Centre and the States/UTs were also undertaken under the Programme.

(e) : The public awareness creation activities, case detection drive, early treatment with Multi Drug Therapy, disability and ulcer care including reconstructive surgery for medical rehabilitation and training of general health care staff are important activities proposed to be taken.

For the purpose of socio-economic rehabilitation of leprosy patients, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment which is the nodal agency, is operating a separate scheme.
