Question : ILLEGAL MINING OF URANIUM



(a) whether the Government is aware of huge availability of uranium in Meghalaya;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the Government is also aware of illegal mining of uranium in the State;

(d) if so, the details thereof; and

(e) the steps taken to deal with such illegal mining?

(a) Yes, Sir.

(b) Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMD), a constituent unit under the Department of Atomic Energy, has so far identified 21,180 tonnes in-situ uranium resources in the state of Meghalaya

(c) No such information is available with the Government

(d)&(e) Do not arise in view of reply to (c) above.
