Question : SHORTAGE OF POWER



(a) whether the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has projected power shortage in the country during the year 2011-12;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the Government has made any action plan to meet the projected power shortage in the country; and

(d) if so, the details thereof?

(a) : Yes, Madam.

(b) : As per the Load Generation Balance Report (LGBR) for 2011-12 prepared by CEA, energy shortage and peak shortage in the country have been assessed as 10.3% and 12.9% respectively.

(c) & (d) : Government has taken a number of steps to mitigate shortage of power in the country, which include (i) acceleration in generating capacity addition, (ii) rigorous monitoring of on-going generation projects, (iii) coordinated operation and maintenance of hydro, thermal and nuclear and gas based power stations to optimally utilize the existing generating capacity, (iv) strengthening of inter-state and inter-regional transmission capacity for optimum utilization of available power etc. Projects aggregating 40,781 MW have already been commissioned during the 11th Plan upto 18th August, 2011 and balance capacity is under execution. The energy and peaking shortage during April to July, 2011 reduced to 6.2% and 9.9% from 11.1% and 13.8% in April to July, 2010 respectively.
