Question : Sources of Drinking Water

(a) the main source of drinking water for majority of households in the country; and
(b) the percentage of households drawing drinking water from piped water supply, Public tap/standpipe, tubewell/ borehole, protected dug well, unprotected dug well, unprotected spring, rainwater collection and bottled water, separately for each source?

(a) The main source of drinking water for majority of rural households in the country are ground water based piped water supply schemes, hand pump/ tube well / well water along with other sources as deemed fit as per geographical area of the States.
(b) As per data entered by the States on Integrated Management Information System (IMIS) of this Ministry, as on 14.03.2017, 54.67% population has access to Piped Water Supply and , 15.39% of total rural household have tap connection. The details of population using various rural water supply schemes like PWS, Hand Pump (HP), Rain Water Harvesting structures and others like Spring, Pond, Canal etc. are at Annexure.

Further, this Ministry does not maintain household-wise information regarding drawing drinking water from different sources.
