Question : New National Textile Policy

(a) whether the new national Textiles Policy framed by the Government aims to create 35 million new jobs by attracting the foreign investments and to safeguard the interests of the weavers keeping in view the large scale suicides committed by the weavers;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the Government has fixed any target to increase the percentage of textiles in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP);

(d) if so, the details thereof;

(e) whether the Government proposes to bring a new legislation to solve the problems of weavers; and

(f) if so, the details thereof?

(a) to (d): Ministry of Textiles had constituted an Expert Committee headed by Shri Ajay Shankar, Member Secretary, National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council for reviewing the Textile Policy 2000. The Expert Committee has since submitted a draft Vision, Strategy and Action Plan. This document has proposed an action plan for additional job creation by about 35 million, export of US$ 185 billion worth of Textile and Apparel, domestic production level of US$ 350 billion and investment of US$ 200 billion by 2024-25. This matter is under process. No report on large scale suicide committed by weavers has been received.
