Question : MID DAY MEAL SCHEME



(a) whether the percentage of Government and aided schools providing mid-day meals to students has reportedly dropped significantly over the year;

(b) if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor;

(c) whether the Government proposes to provide mid-day meals to the school children in a centralised manner and if so,the details thereof;

(d) the details of the funds allocated and utilized under the scheme during each of the last three years and the current year,State/UT-wise; and

(e) the corrective steps taken/being taken by the Government to improve coverage of the scheme?

(a)& (b): The coverage of institutions under Mid Day Meal Scheme over the year 2012-13 & 2013-14 is as under:

It is evident from the above table that % of the institution covered under MDMS is almost stagnant.

(c): As per the provisions of Mid Day Meal Guidelines, Centralized kitchens in urban areas could be set up for a cluster of schools where there is a shortage of space for construction of kitchen-cum-stores in the school premises.

(d):State-wise details of the funds allocated and utilized during the last 3 years and the current year is at annexure-I.

(e): The performance of the States is reviewed through meetings with State Education Secretaries, various periodic reports, field visits and Joint Review Mission (JRM) etc. and it is impressed upon States Governments to provide maximum coverage and to take remedial measures wherever deficiencies are noticed.
