Question : Complaints against Defence Officers

(a) whether the Government has recently recommended probe by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against the senior officials of Army on the basis of complaints received with regard to acquiring property disproportionate to their source of income and for taking bribe in lieu of promotion;

(b) if so, the details thereof along with the details of defence deals and foreign companies involved therein;

(c) the number of corruption cases disposed of in the army during the last three years and the current year along with the number of cases pending; and

(d) the effective steps taken / proposed to be taken by the Government to curb the corruption in the army?

MINISTER OF DEFENCE (SHRI MANOHAR PARRIKAR)

(a) & (b): Complaints regarding corrupt practices including disproportionate assets in respect of two Army officers have been referred to CBI for investigation. The CBI has started investigation in these cases.

(c) The number of cases pertaining to various types of financial irregularities / corruption disposed off during last three years are as under:-

The number of such cases pending trial by a General Court Martial and under process by CBI is 30 (thirty) as on date.

(d) While the environment has been sensitized and commanders at all levels have been instructed to remain vigilant to curb corruption, the various vigilance and investigative measures are being further strengthened. Stringent and prompt action is initiated whenever any such case comes to light. These cases are dealt with in an exemplary manner under the Army Act. The punishments are exemplary and promulgated in an open forum to ensure that the environment remains adequately vigilant against all forms of corruption.
