Question : Quality of Potable Water

(a) the percentage quantity of potable water supplied in the country as per the World Health Organisation;
(b) the number of cases of contaminated potable water supply in the States like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, etc. during the last three years;
(c) the extent to which our laboratories are capable to check the quality of the potable water;
(d) whether the entire country has been connected with the Online Integrated System for Quality Monitoring Result; and
(e) if so, the details thereof?

(a) to (e) As reported by States/ UTs, out of total 17.03 lakh rural habitations, except in 48,993 habitations, in rest all habitations, drinking water sources are potable. Based on water quality testing, year–wise number of quality-affected habitations reported in the last three years, is annexed.
Under JJM, States/ UTs can utilize upto 2% of their annual allocation for taking up water quality monitoring & surveillance activities. States/ UTs have been asked to upgrade different level of laboratories i.e. State, district, sub-division and/ or block level and get NABL accreditation and/ or recognition. As per existing guidelines, States/ UTs have been advised to carry out testing of drinking water sources on regular basis and report the same on JJM–Integrated Management Information System (IMIS).
