Question : Drinking Water Crisis

(a) whether the Union Government has sought suggestions from State Governments to tackle drinking water crisis;
(b) if so, the number of proposals received from different backward States of the country including Chhattisgarh for safe drinking water scheme;
(c) the State-wise details of drinking water projects pending with the Union Government; and
(d) the time limit set for completion of the said pending projects?

(a) to (d) Rural drinking water supply is a state subject. This Ministry provides technical & financial assistance to all States for improving the coverage of safe drinking water to rural population. Under National Rural Drinking Water Programme (NRDWP), the States are empowered to plan, approve and implement rural drinking water supply schemes / projects. The schemes / projects to be taken up in a State are approved by the State Level Scheme Sanctioning Committee (SLSSC) and need not come to this Ministry for approval. As such, there is no question of pendency with the Ministry or delay in this respect.
