Question : Criteria for Classical Language

be pleased to refer to the reply given on 10.02.2020 to Unstarred Question No. 1192 regarding ‘Status of Classical Language to Marathi’ and state:

(a) whether the Government has completed consultations and the work of reviewing the criteria related to classification as a classical language for granting status of classical language to Marathi;

(b) if so, the details along with the current status in this regard;

(c) whether the State Government of Maharashtra has again requested the Union Government to grant the status of classical language to Marathi;

(d) whether Marathi language has been granted the status of a classical language; and

(e) if not, the present position in this regard?

(a) & (b) No Sir. The task of reviewing the criteria for classification of a language as a classical language is still under process.

(c) Yes Sir. The State Government of Maharashtra has requested the Union Government to grant the status of classical language to Marathi.

(d) & (e) No Sir. The matter of granting classical status to Marathi language is under consideration of the Government.
