Answer given by the minister

MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF RAILWAYS (SHRI MANOJ SINHA)

(a) to (c): A Statement is laid on the Table of the House.

STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PARTS (a) TO (c) OF UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 1945 BY SHRI TAMRADHWAJ SAHU TO BE ANSWERED IN LOK SABHA ON 09.03.2015 REGARDING EXTENSION OF NEW RAILWAY LINES

(a) to (c): Requests for new lines, both formal as well as informal, are received by Railways at various levels i.e. Railway Board, Zonal Railways and Divisional Headquarters etc. As receipt of such complaints/suggestions is a continuous and dynamic process, centralized compendium of such letters is not maintained. Moreover, new lines generally straddle over more than one State and details of ongoing surveys is not maintained State-wise. However, zone-wise number of ongoing surveys for new lines, including those falling in Chhattisgarh, is as under:-

Zonal Railway	No. of ongoing survey for New Lines Central	24 East Coast	18 East Central	25 Eastern	4 North Central	12 North Eastern	19 Northeast Frontier	6 Northern	39 North Western	11 South Central	14 South East Central	36 South Eastern	4 Southern	15 South Western	21 West Central	13 Western	27 Total	288

Surveys require investigation of one or more routes, in consultation with State Governments & forest department, to decide the most technically feasible alignment, interaction with State Government, trade and industries for assessment of traffic projections, preparation of plans and drawings for calculation of costs etc. Since this is an extensive exercise, hence it is not possible to fix time lines for completion of all these surveys and the lines being made functional.
