Question : SETTING UP OF POST MATRIC HOSTELS



(a) whether the Government proposes to formulate any scheme for setting up of the post-matric hostels for the students of backward classes in the country;

(b) if so, the details thereof, State-wise; and

(c) the amount of funds sanctioned for the same?

(a) to (c) The Centrally Sponsored Scheme titled “Construction & Running of Girls’ Hostel for Students of Secondary & Higher Secondary Schools”, approved by the Cabinet, is being implemented from 2009-10. The Scheme envisages construction of one hostel with the capacity of 100 girls in each of 3479 Educationally Backward Blocks (EBBs) in the country. The girl students in the age group of 14-18 years studying in classes IX to XII belonging to SC, ST, OBC, Minority Communities and BPL families form the target group of the Scheme. At least 50% of girl students should be from SC, ST, OBC, & Minority Communities. The details of funds released to various States during the last three years are annexed as Statement I.

However, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment is implementing a Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Construction of Hostels for OBC Boys and Girls. The Scheme aims at providing hostel facilities to students belonging to socially and educationally backward classes, especially from rural areas, to enable them to pursue secondary and higher education. The details of funds released to various States, UT Administrations etc. during last three years are annexed as Statement II.
