Question : Breach of Aadhaar Data

Will the Minister of ELECTRONICS AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY be pleased to state:

(a) whether it is a fact that names and addresses of some Aadhaar cardholders were made public on more than 200 websites of Central and State Governments as per Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI);

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) the action taken by the Government against the departments of Central and State Government and education institutes and private organisations who have made the names and address of Aadhaar cardholders public;

(d) whether any steps have been taken by the Government to ensure that the information of Aadhaar cardholders is not made public by any Government and private department; and

(e) if so, the details thereof?

Answer given by the minister

(a) and (b): Yes, Sir. It was found that approximately 210 websites of Central Government, State Government departments and some educational institutes were displaying the list of beneficiaries along with their name, address, other details and Aadhaar numbers for information of general public.
(c) to (e): The concerned departments/websites were instructed to remove the Aadhaar and other personal data from the said websites. In addition, the Central and State Governments have been advised to sensitize all Ministries/ Departments to take all precautions while publishing or sharing data on their websites and ensure compliance of Aadhaar Act, 2016 and Information Technology Act, 2000.
