Question : TARGETS FOR IRRIGATED LAND



(a) the total irrigated land area in terms of hectares and its percentage to total cultivable land in the country;

(b) whether any target has been fixed for creation of additional irrigation capacity in the country during the 12th plan period;

(c) if so, the details and status thereof including the achievements made so far; and

(d) the efforts being made to achieve the target fixed for 12th plan?

STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PARTS (a) TO (d) OF STARRED QUESTION No.598 TO BE ANSWERED IN LOK SABHA ON 07.05.2015 REGARDING TARGETS FOR IRRIGATED LAND

(a) According to Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperation, out of the total agricultural land of 181983 thousand ha, the gross irrigated area was 91530 thousand ha i.e. 50.30% of the total agricultural land.

(b) & (c) The target fixed for the creation of additional irrigation capacity during the XII Plan is 7.9 MHa through on-going and new Major and Medium Irrigation projects. According to the Niti Aayog, 759.30 thousand ha has been irrigated till 2012-13.

(d) Various steps for creation of irrigation potential are undertaken by respective State Governments. In order to supplement the efforts of the State Governments, Government of India provides technical and financial assistance to State Governments to increase Irrigation potential through various schemes i.e “Accelerated Irrigation Benefits Programme” (AIBP), “Command Area Development and Water Management” (CAD&WM) and “Repair, Restoration and Renovation” (RRR) of Water Bodies.
