Question : FOOD STREET



(a) whether Government has decided to set up a ‘food street’ in certain cities across the country;

(b) if so, name of the cities selected for the purpose; and

(c) the steps taken by the Government to implement the scheme and also to ensure that the surroundings of food street are hygienic and clean by providing public utilities and waste disposal system?

(a) to (c): Under the scheme for “Upgradation of the Quality of Street Food”, Government has planned to upgrade streets in 25 cities of tourist importance across the country as Food-Street during the Eleventh Five Year Plan Period, subject to obtaining formal approval of the Competent Authority. The scheme is to be implemented through urban local bodies & the state governments.

The designing and planning of the scheme is at a preliminary stage. Cities have not yet been selected for the purpose.

Steps will be taken by the Government to implement the scheme once the formal approval is obtained. With the active participation of Urban Local Bodies and the state governments, proper care will be taken to ensure that the surrounding of food street are hygienic and clean by providing public utilities and waste disposal systems.
