Question : Seats for M.D. in Different Faculties

(a) the total number of seats for M.D. in General Medicine, Nephrology, Neurology, Cardiology and Oncology available in various medical colleges in the country, State/UT-wise and college-wise;
(b) the details indicating the number of M.Ds. passed out from medical colleges in the country during the last three years;
(c) whether the number of M.Ds. passing out each year from medical colleges is adequate to meet the requirements of the country;
(d) if so, the details thereof; and
(e) if not, the steps taken/proposed to be taken by the Government to enhance the seats in the above said categories?

(a) & (b) As informed by National Medical Commission, MD Courses are not available in Nephrology, Neurology and Cardiology. However, DM Courses are available in these specialities. There are 4406 seats of MD in General Medicine in 375 Medical colleges and 422 seats of MD in Radiation Oncology in 94 Medical colleges. The college-wise and State/UT wise details of seats are at Annexure-I & Annexure-II.

(c) to (e) The Government has taken following steps to further increase the availability of medical seats/ doctors in the country: -
i. Centrally Sponsored Scheme for strengthening/ upgradation of existing State Government/Central Government Medical Colleges to increase MBBS and PG seats.
ii. Central Sector Scheme for upgradation of Government Medical Colleges by construction of Super Specialty Blocks. A total of 75 projects have been approved and 55 have been completed.
iii. Under Central Sector Scheme for setting up of new AIIMS, 22 AIIMS have been approved. Undergraduate courses have started in 19 AIIMS.
iv. DNB qualification has been recognized for appointment as faculty to take care of shortage of faculty.
v. DNB diploma courses have been approved in 8 broad specialities.
vi. The ratio of teachers to students has been rationalized to increase the number of postgraduate medical seats in the country.
vii. By amending the regulations, it has been made mandatory for all medical colleges to start PG courses within 3 years from the date of their MBBS recognition /continuation of recognition
