Question : POOR SIGN BOARDS



(a) whether Indian roads including the newly laid four lane roads under the Golden Quadrilateral Scheme have poor sign boards and the visibility of the roads during night is poor;

(b) the proportional spending for road signs and road markings in road laying;

(c) whether foreign technical input is taken into consideration in road signage designing; and

(d) if so, the measures planned to increase visibility of roads during night?

(a) Sign boards and road markings for improved visibility are provided on National Highways depending upon the site requirements and availability of funds. Golden Quadrilateral project has sufficient provision of road signs and road markings for better visibility of roads during night.

(b) The provision of road signs along National highways is an integral part of the road development projects and the requirement vary in different stretches.

(c) Road signage designing is done according to Indian Roads Congress Standards and Guidelines.

(d) To facilitate better visibility during night, it has been decided to use retro-reflective road signs, which include micro-prismatic type road signs.
