Question : Mechanised Slaughter Houses

Will the Minister of HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE be pleased to state:

(a) the number of mechanised slaughter houses operating in the country;

(b) the number of slaughter houses that have licences under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006;

(c) whether such slaughter houses are registered with Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, if so, the details thereof and Statewise list with the daily capacity of the slaughter houses along with the live stock census of the State; and

(d) whether any domestic need assessment was done before such licenses were granted under the Food Safety and Standards Act and if so, the details thereof?

ANSWER
THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH AND

(a) & (b): As per the information available in the Food Licensing and Registration System (FLRS) of the Food Safety Standards Authority of India, the total number of slaughter houses (mechanised and non mechanised) for which license/registration have been issued under Food Safety and Standards (FSS) Act, 2006 is 1707.
(c ): The Agricultural and Processed Foods Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) registers integrated abattoir-cum-meat processing plants/stand alone abattoirs engaged in export. The State-wise details are in Annexure-I. As per information provided by the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying & Fisheries, data of Livestock Population as per 19th Livestock Census-2012 (All India Report) is annexed at Annexure-II.

(d): No such assessment is carried out before grant of licenses. In terms of Section 31 of the FSS Act, 2006, all Food Business Operators have to obtain License/Registration for commencing any business.
