Question : THE REPRESENTATION OF THE PEOPLE ACT



(a) the dates on which the Representation of the People Act was passed by the Parliament and published in the Gazette of India;

(b) the number of public representatives held disqualified from the membership of legislatures so far along with the quantum of punishment prescribed under the said Act;

(c) whether any instances of misuse of the said Act against the public representatives have been noticed by the Government;

(d) if so, the details thereof along with the action taken thereon by the Government; and

(e) the steps taken/proposed to be taken by the Government to prevent the misuse of the said Act against the public representatives?

(a) The Representation of the People Act, 1950 (43 of 1950) and the Representation of the People Act, 1951 (43 of 1951) were assented to by the President of India on 12,05.1950 and 17.07.1951 respectively and published in the Gazette of India on 13.05.1950 and 18.07.1951 respectively.
