Question : Violence against Women

(a) whether the Government is aware of the incidents of violence against women which is not reported to the police; and

(b) if so, the total number of such cases during each of the last three years and the current year State-wise?

(a) & (b): State/UT-wise cases registered under crime against women is enclosed as Annexure-I.
Ministry of Home Affairs has issued advisories on crime against women to all State Governments/UTs. These advisories specifically direct the States/UTs to increase the number of women in police force, compulsory registration of FIR, women police station, 24x7 women help desk. These advisories are available at www.mha.nic.in.
‘Police’ and ‘Public Order’ are State subjects under the seventh Schedule to the Constitution of India. The responsibilities to maintain law and order, protection of life and property of the citizens rest primarily with the respective State Governments. The State Governments are competent to deal with such offences under the extant provisions of laws.
