Question : Tenure of Chairman in CBDT and CBEC

(a) whether the Government has fixed any tenure for the post of Chairman, Central Board of Direct Taxation (CBDT) and Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) under Department of Revenue, if so, the details thereof;

(b) whether there is any policy guidelines issued for the grant of extension of service to officers of the Government of India, if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the Chairman, CBDT has been given extension of service after the superannuation age; and

(d) if so, the reasons for the grant of such extension?

(a) No, Sir.

(b) The Department of Personnel and Training (DoP&T) has laid down the criteria for grant of extension/re-employment to Central Government employees beyond the age of superannuation in the O.M. No.26011/1/77-Estt. (B) dated 18.05.1977 and subsequent revised instructions in O.M.No.26012/6/2002-Estt. (a) dated 09.12.2002.

(c) & (d) No, Sir. The present Chairman, Central Board of Direct Taxes retired on attainment of age of superannuation on 31.05.2017. He was re-employed to the post of Chairman, Central Board of Direct Taxes upto 31.05.2018, which has been further extended upto 31.05.2019 in public interest.
