Question : URANIUM REACTORS



(a) the number of uranium reactors in the country at present alongwith the locations thereof;

(b) the number out of them functioning and from which source the uranium requirement of these reactors are met;

(c) whether these reactors have achieved optimum electricity generation capacity during the last three years;

(d) if not, the reasons therefor; and

(e) the corrective steps taken by the Government in this regard?

(a) At present, there are twelve nuclear power reactors using uranium as fuel, under operation in the country, as follows :

(b) All the above reactors are functioning. Out of these, two reactors (TAPS-1&2), based on Boiling Water Reactor

(BWR) technology, use slightly enriched uranium as fuel. Remaining ten reactors based on Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) technology, use indigenously available natural uranium as fuel. The requirement of fuel for TAPS-1&2 is met from imports. The requirement of natural uranium is met from indigenous sources.
