Question : Promotion of Organic Farming

(a) whether acreage and production of organic crops has not increased even after inception of the National Project on Organic Farming (NPOF) and various programmes and schemes for the promotion of organic farming in the country;

(b) if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor;

(c) whether the Government has received proposals from various States including Maharashtra, Kerala and Rajasthan for promotion of organic farming;

(d) if so, the details thereof along with the funds allocated and utilised for the purpose during each of the last three years and the current year, Scheme and Statewise; and

(e) whether the Government proposes to provide subsidy and incentive to the farmers for the promotion of organic farming across the country, if so, the details thereof?

(a) & (b): Government is promoting organic farming across the country through various schemes/ programmes. As per the APEDA record cultivated area under certified organic farming has grown almost 17 fold i.e. 42,000 ha. in 2003-04 to 7.23 lakh ha. in 2013-14. State- wise area under organic farming during 2013-14 is given in Annexure-I.

(c) & (d): Government has received proposals from Maharashtra of Rs.6860.75 lakh, Kerala of Rs.840.97 lakh and Rajasthan of Rs.5222.64 lakh for promotion of organic farming in cluster mode by covering 50 acre area of 50 farmers per cluster under the Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) of National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture during the year 2015-2016. will be covered during the three years. State-wise funds approved under the scheme for the year 2015-16 are given in Annexure-II A. The fund utilized/released for the promotion of organic farming during each of the last three years and the current year is given in Annexure-II B.

(e): The Government is providing subsidy/ assistance under various schemes/ programmes viz. National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA), Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY), Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH), National Mission on Oilseeds and Oil Palm (NMOOP) and Network Project on Organic Farming of ICAR.
