Question : Investment in Airport Sector

(a) whether the Government proposes to give a massive boost to the airport sector by an investment worth Rs.90,000 crore and if so, the details thereof;
(b) the details of the pattern of investment through private players and the Airports Authority of India (AAI);
(c) the details including the number of operational airports in the country at present;
(d) the details of the new airports and expansion of the existing ones proposed/likely to be carried out during the next five years;
(e) whether the Government is aware that India is expected to become the third largest market in terms of the passengers by 2024 and if so, the details thereof; and
(f) the details of works proposesd to be carried out by the Government to counter this huge flow of passengers in the coming years?

(a) to (f): A statement is laid on the Table of House.
Statement referred to in the reply to parts (a) to (f) of the Lok Sabha Starred Question No. 275 regarding "Investment in Airport Sector" to be answered on 16.12.2021; (a) & (b): Under National Infrastructure Pipeline (NIP), an investment to the tune of approximately Rs. 90,000 Crores is planned to give a boost to the civil aviation sector in the country. Out of total planned amount, Airports Authority of India (AAI) has taken up a development programme to spend around Rs. 25,000 crores from FY 2019-20 to FY 2024-25 for expansion and modification of existing terminals, new terminals, expansion or strengthening of existing runways, aprons, Airport Navigation Services (ANS), control towers, technical blocks etc. and around Rs. 65,000 crore has been planned for investment through private players for the development of new airports and expansion of existing airports across the country under Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode during the said period.; (c): At present, there are 130 operational airports in the country. A list of these operational airports is enclosed as Annexure - A.; (d) to (f): As per Airports Council International (ACI), India is the third largest market in terms of total air passengers in the world since 2018. To meet the growing demand, Government of India (GoI) has accorded ''in-principle'' approval for setting up of 21 Greenfield Airports across the country namely Mopa in Goa, Navi Mumbai, Shirdi and Sindhudurg in Maharashtra, Kalaburagi, Bijapur, Hassan and Shimoga in Karnataka, Datia (Gwalior) in Madhya Pradesh, Kushinagar and Noida (Jewar) in Uttar Pradesh, Dholera and Hirasar in Gujarat, Karaikal in Puducherry, Dagadarthi, Bhogapuram and Oravakal in Andhra Pradesh, Durgapur in West Bengal, Pakyong in Sikkim, Kannur in Kerala and Hollongi (Itanagar) in Arunachal Pradesh out of which eight airports namely Durgapur, Shirdi, Sindhudurg, Pakyong, Kannur, Kalaburagi, Oravakal and Kushinagar have been operationalized.
