Question : Drug Trafficking Cases

(a) whether it is a fact that cases against drugs peddlers and smuggling are running for more than ten years in various courts of the country and the culprits have not been punished;

(b) if so, the details thereto;

(c) whether it is also a fact that trial of peddlers and smugglers are completed within a short span of time and such offenders are punished expeditiously in other countries compared to India; and

(d) if so, the reaction of the Government thereof and the corrective steps taken by the Government in this regard?

(a) & (b): In some cases, the trial of cases against drug peddlers and smuggling is pending for more than 10 years. The details of such cases is enclosed at Annexure - A .

(c) & (d): Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), a nodal agency for all drug law enforcement agencies has informed that they do not collect information on trials conducted in other countries.
To ensure expeditious trial of cases, NCB, on its part, undertakes the following steps:
(i) Files complaints on time

(ii) Appoints Special Public Prosecutors without delay for seeing trial of
cases.
(iii) Requests Trial Courts to abide by the directions of the Hon’ble
Supreme Court as given in the case of Thana Singh Vs. CBN (Crl.
Appeal No. 1640/2010).
