Question : ITEMS RESERVED FOR SMALL SCALE INDUSTRY SECTOR



(a) whether some items are reserved for small scale industry sector in the context of globalisation and liberalisation;

(b) if so, the details of such items;

(c) whether the goods produced by SSIs are unable to compete in quality with items produced in big industries;

(d) if so, the justification behind keeping these items reserved for small scale industries; and

(e) the manner in which the quality of products which are being produced by SSIs would be improved?

(a) and (b): In tune with the policy of Government to protect the interest of the small scale sector, there are, at present, 812 items reserved for exclusive manufacture in the small scale sector. These items are listed in the notification of Government of India in the Ministry of Industry, Department of Industrial Development, No. S.O.477(E) dated 25th July, 1991, as amended from time to time and published in the extra-ordinary issue of the Gazette of India.

(c) : No Sir. The export performance of small scale sector has gone up from Rs. 36,470 crore in 1995-96 to Rs.48,979 crore in 1998-99 which indicates that goods produced by the small scale sector are of international standard.

(d) and (e): Does not arise.
