Question : LAND UNDER IRRIGATION



(a) whether under “Bharat Nirman” the Government proposes to bring an additional one crore hectare of land under irrigation, over a period of four years from 2005-2006 to 2008-2009;

(b) if so, the expenditure to be incurred for the purpose and how does it reflect in Budget 2005- 2006;

(c) whether the Government is planning to bear this cost entirely or mobilize funds through private participation; and

(d) if so, the details thereof?

(a) Yes Sir.

(b) The total estimated fund requirement for irrigation under ‘Bharat Nirman” is Rs. 68,500 crore over a period of 4 years. The allocation of plan funds for irrigation to various State Governments for 2005-06 is Rs. 17,203.08 crore which includes the allocations under various schemes providing central assistance and Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme (AIBP).

(c) & (d) The fund requirements are proposed to be met through an appropriate mix of budgetary support by Centre and States, external assistance, market borrowing and beneficiary contribution (in some cases).
