Question : DEVELOPMENT OF A N ISLANDS



(a) the number of islands in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands alongwith the population of the said Islands;

(b) the number of islands out of the above which are proposed to be inter-linked by rail and roadways giving the details thereof;

(c) whether the Government has formulated any comprehensive schemes for the overall development of the said islands; and

(d) if so, the details thereof alongwith the funds granted/utilised during each of the last three years?

MINISTER OF THE STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF HOME AFFAIRS (SHRI MULLAPPALLY RAMACHANDRAN)

(a): There are 37 inhabited islands in the I Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Island-wise population in these Islands has been shown in Annexure -I.

(b): No proposal to inter-link islands by rail has been received by the Andaman and Nicobar Administration from the Ministry of Railways. However, Andaman and Nicobar Administration proposes to inter-link the following four islands by roadways as under:

(i) South Andaman Island (Chidiyatapu to Jirkatant).

(ii) Baratang Island.

(iii) Middle Andaman Island (Kadamtala to Mayabunder).

(iv) North Andaman Island (Mohanpur to Aerial Bay).

(c) & (d): The Andaman and Nicobar Administration has formulated 174 Plan Schemes for development of these Islands. The sector-wise details thereof alongwith the details of funds granted/utilized in last three years have been shown in Annexure -II.
