(a) to (c) : The Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying on 20th November, 2012 had accorded approval to the proposal of Government of Kerala for construction of a fishing harbour at Vellayil in Kozhikode District at a total cost of Rs. 3930.20 lakh with 75% central assistance under the erstwhile Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) on Development of Marine Fisheries, Infrastructure and Post Harvest Operations. The Government of Kerala has informed that Project for extension of South Breakwater to ensure the required tranquillity inside the harbour basin was sanctioned by Government of Kerala under NABARD RIDF, XXV for an estimated cost of Rs.22.33crore. The work is almost completed and required level of tranquillity is achieved inside the basin. The details of the estimated business after completion of the Project are (i) The harbour construction will enhance fish landing to 8980 tonnes per annum valued at Rs.32.00 crores from 1457 tonnes per annum valued at Rs.519.00 lakhs (ii)The internal rate of return of the project is 15 to 16%. (iii)The Project also generates additional 10,000 direct employment and 1,00,000 indirect employment (iv) The fishermen of adjacent villages i.e., Vellayil, Puthiyankadavu, Thoppâyil, Kamburam will be able to land their catches throughout the year even in adverse weather conditions. The provisions being created are adequate for meeting the needs of the local fisher communities and as such there is no proposal for adding provisions for major fishing business for future.
