Question : AMENDMENT IN FOREIGNERS ACT



(a) whether the Sixteenth Law Commission has recommended several amendments to the Foreigners Act to effectively deal with unauthorised entry of foreigners and tackle cross-border terrorism;

(b) if so, the details in this regard; and

(c) the steps taken by the Government in this regard?

(a)&(b): The Law Commission has made certain recommendations to amend the Foreigners Act, 1946 to check illegal migration. The recommendations, inter-alia, relate to the establishment of a machinery consisting of Chief Immigration Officer and immigration officers to speedily and promptly decide on cases relating to illegal immigration, violation of conditions of visa etc. by a foreigner and designation of sessions courts of a district as Immigration Court which may take cognizance of the complaints against the offenders etc.

(c): The matter is under consideration.
