Question : Toxic Waste of Chemical Factories

(a) the quantum of waste generated by the factories in the chemical and industrial areas every year in Nagda City in Ujjain and the quantum of toxic waste; (b) the procedure adopted with regard to toxic waste by the chemical factories before releasing it to water bodies; (c) whether any action has been taken against the companies releasing toxic waste to water bodies and if so, the details thereof; and (d) whether any case has been registered under the misuse of toxic waste, if so, the details thereof and the action taken thereon?

(a) Major industries located in Nagda are M/s Grasim Industries (Staple Fibre Division), M/s Grasim Industries (Chemical Division), M/s Lanxess India Ltd. The Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board has allowed M/s Grasim Industries (Staple Fibre Division) to discharge industrial effluent upto 12500 KL per day after treatment with a condition to achieve Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) on or before Jan 2021. Remaining two industries have already achieved Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) and not discharging any wastewater into the river
(b) M/s Grasim Industries (SFD), has provided effluent treatment plant of 36MLD capacity to treat the industrial effluent and of colony. In addition 2.6MLD capacity Sewage treatment Plant is also installed with Reverse Osmosis plant to treat the domestic waste. M/s Grasim Industries (Chemical Division) and M/s Lanxess India Ltd. have provided Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) system.
(c) & (d) A direction u/s 18 (1) (b) under the Water Act has been issued by CPCB to the MPPCB on 19.2.2019 for directing the industries to comply with the discharge norms and imposing environmental compensation on non-complying units.
