Question : VOLUNTARY ORGANISATIONS PROMOTING BLOOD DONATION



(a) the details of organisations active in the country for encouraging people to donate blood and other organs voluntarily ;

(b) the details of such organisations active in Gujarat especially in Rajkot district;

(c) the details of grants provided to these organisations during the last three years;

(d) whether the Government will encourage more and more voluntary organizations to work in the said fields;

(e) if so, whether the Government has formulated any scheme in this regard; and

(f) if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor?

(a): Indian Society of Blood Transfusion and Immunohematology (ISBTI) and its State-Chapters are registered scientific bodies, which are actively involved in promoting voluntary blood donation in the country. Beside ISBTI, Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), National Cadets Corps (NCC), National Service Scheme (NSS), various clubs of India (Rotary, Lions, etc), several religious and voluntary associations (Thalassemia society, Nirankari, etc.) are regularly conducting voluntary blood donation camps and propagating the message of voluntary blood donation amongst the general population.

(b): There are 71 organizations active in Gujarat working for promotion of voluntary blood donation out of which 30 are in Rajkot district.

(c) Reimbursement of amount spent on donor motivation camps and camp related to other expenditure of IRCS and other blood banks for promoting voluntary blood donation are facilitated by the Gujarat State Blood Transfusion Council (GSBTC). The expenditure done by GSBTC during last three years is as under:

2002-03 14.31 lakhs
2003-04 20.58 lakhs
2004-05 21.09 lakhs





(d)The Government strongly support all the voluntary organizations working in the country for the promotion of voluntary blood donation programme.

(e) & (f) Government through its Action Plan on Blood Safety has launched an extensive awareness program for blood banking services including, recruitment and retention of voluntary non-remunerated blood donors, donor motivation, so as to ensure adequate availability of safe blood.

The aim of this objective is to phase out gradually replacement donors and focus the attention on augmenting blood collection through voluntary non-remunerated blood donations. ...
